Denis Gurianov nets game-winning goal nine seconds into overtime
CEDAR PARK, Texas -- Forward Denis Gurianov played the hero in the Texas Stars’ 4-3 overtime win against the San Antonio Rampage on Monday afternoon at the AT&T Center.
The Texas forward scored nine seconds into overtime after poke-checking the puck away from San Antonio defenseman Chris Bigras to force a breakaway. The Russian native then shot the puck past Rampage netminder Spencer Martin to win the game.
The Stars (18-15-1-2) now have a 5-2-0-0 record against San Antonio (16-19-4-0) this season.
Both hockey clubs went tit-for-tat in goals throughout 60 minutes of regulation with San Antonio forward Reid Petryk opened the scoring for the home team eight minutes into the game. The Stars then evened up the score when forward Matej Stransky off of a feed from Gemel Smith.
Stransky’s second goal of the night, which gave the Stars their first lead of the game, came at the 5:10 mark of the middle frame. Captain Travis Morin and Brandon DeFazio were credited with the assists, with DeFazio earning his 100th professional career assist in the process.
The Rampage quickly evened things up at 2-2 when forward Rocco Grimaldi scored 38 seconds later to tie the game back up. The home team would take their second lead of the night after Anton Lindholm launched the puck past the Stars’ rookie netminder Landon Bow with eight minutes to play in the second.
Defenseman Mattias Backman then scored his first goal since returning to the lineup on January 6 with 57 seconds remaining in the second period to, once again, tie the game.
The Stars and Rampage went into the third period deadlocked at three goals each, and, despite opportunities on both sides, were unable to score in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Texas went 0-for-3 on the power play with San Antonio going 0-for-4 on the man-advantage.
Bow earned his fifth AHL career win in the matchup stopping 21 of 23 shots faced. Martin stopped 25-of-29 in the loss.
