Travis Morin Extends Point Streak to Six Games
SAN ANTONIO -- Two quick goals in the third period held up as the Texas Stars fell to the San Antonio Rampage 3-2 on Friday night at AT&T Center in San Antonio.
The home team tied the game at two goals each just 1:35 into the third after Rampage forward Jim O’Brien’s wrister hit the post and bounced off Texas’ newly acquired netminder Justin Peters.
Just over a minute later, forward Julien Nantel found his way past Peters when he scored on a Texas turnover in front of the net 2:55 into the final frame of action to give San Antonio (21-21-4-0) a permanent 3-2 lead over the Stars (20-20-1-2).
San Antonio, who hosted their annual Pink in the Rink event to a crowd of 14,524, opened up scoring for the night when forward Rocco Grimaldi tallied a goal at the 8:03 mark of the first period. Grimaldi’s goal was the only show of offense for the first 20 minutes of action.
The second period saw the Stars tie the game when rookie forward Denis Gurianov launched a one-timer from the right circle past Rampage goaltender Jeremy Smith at the 3:58 mark of the middle frame. Stars Captain Travis Morin, who extended his point streak to six games, and defenseman Matt Mangene were credited with the assists on Gurianov’s eighth goal of the season.
Forward Jason Dickinson then gave the Stars a 2-1 lead after he finished off a counter-attack rush on a wrist-shot goal from the slot for his seventh of the year late in the second.
Peters stopped 27 of 30 for the Stars in the loss while Smith stopped 26 of 28 for the Rampage.
The two in-state divisional rivals will square off for the back end of a home-and-home at H-E-B Center on Saturday night at 7:00 pm CST.
