Herbert Scores Lone Goal for Texas in Loss
ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Caleb Herbert’s penalty-shot goal gave the Texas Stars an early lead, but the Rockford IceHogs responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 win on Friday night in front of 5,216 fans in attendance at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
Matheson Iacopelli scored the game-winner midway through the third in his professional debut for the IceHogs (23-34-9-3). Herbert’s seventh of the season was the first penalty-shot goal scored by Texas (30-33-1-4) this season. Despite the loss, Texas wraps up their season series with a 2-1-0-1 record against Rockford.
The Stars continue their three-in-three road weekend Saturday against the Milwaukee Admirals at 6 p.m. CST.
Herbert beat Rockford’s Lars Johansson on a clean wrist shot at 8:17 of the first to put Texas up 1-0.
With Rockford entering the second on the power play, Brandon Mashinter drilled a shot from the right circle past Justin Peters just 35 seconds in to knot the score and snap a 0-for-18 power play drought for the IceHogs.
At 9:21 of the third, Michael Latta batted a Texas clearing attempt out of the air and set up Iacopelli for a one-time goal to push the Hogs in front. Jake Dowell added an empty-net tally in the final seconds for the 3-1 final.
Johansson earned the win in net stopping 29 of 30 shots. Peters suffered the loss going 33 of 35.
Texas was 0-for-1 on the power play. Rockford went 1-for-4.
