The Texas Stars suffered a pair of losses last weekend against divisional opponent, the Chicago Wolves.
In Friday's contest, the Stars struck first with a goal from Matej Blumel, his fifth in six games and the Teddy Bear Toss goal, which sent 2,881 bears flying to the ice. After a brief cleaning of the ice, the teams began play again. At 17:47, the Wolves evened the score at 1-1 with a goal from Juha Jaaska on the power play. Just before the end of the first period, Domenick Fensore tallied the Wolves' second power play goal on a shot from high in the slot. The Wolves led 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, the Stars drew an early penalty and went to the man-advantage. Emilio Pettersen went to work behind the net and found Justin Hyrckowian on the doorstep to tie the game at two. Just over four minutes later, Hyrckowian scored his second of the night when Antonio Stranges found him high the slot for a one-timer.
At 14:19, Justin Robidas deflected his teammates' shot past Magnus Hellberg to tie the game at three. Just over a minute later, Blumel scored his second of the game when Kyle Capobianco found him behind the defense. Blumel went forehand, backhand and then top shelf to beat Chicago goaltender Spencer Martin and retake the lead. The Stars led 4-3 after 40 minutes of play.
In the final 20 minutes, the Wolves tied the game at four when captain Josiah Slavin redirected a shot from Fensore to beat Hellberg.
The teams finished regulation tied at four and headed to overtime.
At 2:00 in overtime, Bradly Nadeau found Robidas on a 2-on-1 who shot it past Hellberg for the win. Texas walked away with a point in the standings on Friday night.
Saturday, Remi Poirier (TEX) and Ruslan Khazheyev (CHI) faced off in net. At 9:10 of the first period, Hryckowian scored his third of the weekend, once again from the doorstep, on a feed from Stranges. About five minutes later, Nadeau found Felix Unger Sorem in the slot for Chicago's third power play goal of the weekend. Texas and Chicago were tied after 20 minutes.
The second period held no scoring. Poirier stopped nine shots while Khazheyev stopped six.
The third period began with a goal from Stranges who bunted the puck out of mid-air and beat Khazheyev and retake the lead 2-1. At 7:30 of the third, Ty Smith skated into the offensive zone and found Ryan Suzuki in the left circle who beat Poirier over the shoulder and tie the game at two.
At 10:47, Nadeau scored his sixth of the season when he trailed the play and received a pass from Suzuki. Nadeau blasted it past Poirier and the Wolves took a 3-2 lead.
Just under a minute later, Cameron Hughes scored the equalizer when Arttu Hyry found him on the backdoor. Less than two minutes later, the Wolves regained the lead when Unger Sorem caused chaos in front of the Stars' net. The Stars continued their push to tie the game but ultimately fell short.
The Wolves took the second game of the weekend, 4-3.
The Texas Stars wrap up their four-game homestand with a mid-week matchup against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Grand Rapids' scoring is led by veteran Dominick Shine who has 19 points in 25 games. He is quickly followed by two-time Calder Cup Champion, Joe Snively, who spent the last six seasons with the Hershey Bears.
Grand Rapids currently sits atop the Central Division with 33 points through 25 games. The Griffins are third in the league in penalty kill, stopping power play units 88.6% of the time. However, the power play isn't as strong. Grand Rapids is converting 17% on power play opportunites.
The Griffins are 8-5-1-0 on the road this season while the Stars are 6-3-1-0 at home.
