The Texas Stars completed a perfect five-game road trip as they made their way across the Midwest last week. On Wednesday, the Stars picked up their third win in a row in Grand Rapids, before sweeping the Cleveland Monsters Friday and Saturday at Rocket Arena.
Wednesday's scoring was opened by none other than Matej Blumel, the league's leading scorer, near the halfway point of the first period. Blumel raced into the zone, getting around a defender and threw a backhander over the glove of Jan Bednar.
In the second period, Gavin White tallied his second goal of the season on a wrist shot from the blue line that made it's way through traffic.
Just 23 seconds later, Jack Becker put pressure on the Griffins defender behind the net and found Matthew Seminoff out front. Seminoff threw a backhander that beat Bednar and extended the Stars' lead to three.
The third period began with a goal from recent signee, Sean Chisholm, who scored his first professional goal by cleaning up his own rebound.
During all the Texas scoring, Magnus Hellberg was on the other end stopping every puck that came his way. Hellberg stopped 24 of 24 for his second shutout of the season. The Stars skated away with a 4-0 win and their third in a row.
Texas traveled to Cleveland, Ohio for two games against the North Division's Cleveland Monsters. In Friday's contest, Kole Lind opened the scoring just under eight minutes in when Chisholm dug the puck free near the Monsters bench and found Lind streaking into the zone. Lind, all alone on a breakaway, beat Zach Sawchenko to give Texas a 1-0 lead. Just 22 seconds later, Samuel Knazko got Cleveland on the board with a goal that beat Hellberg after some chaos in front. After the halfway point of the first period, Arttu Hyry tallied his 24th of the season when a wild puck richocheted off the boards and found it's way to the stick of Hyry who beat Sawchenko and gave the Stars the 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The second period began with some back and forth play, but at 11:33 Cleveland's leading scorer, Trey Fix-Wolansky found the back of the net during a hectic scramble in front of Hellberg.
With under five minutes remaining in the frame, the Stars went to the power play where Blumel tallied his 37th of the season—tying a franchise record for most goals in a single season.
Less than two minutes later, Lind collected his second goal of the night when he cleaned up a rebound in front from a Justin Hyrckowian shot. The Stars carried a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
In the third period, the Monsters tallied their third and fourth goals off the sticks of Fix-Wolansky and Hunter McKown to tie the game at 4-4, forcing overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, Blumel stepped up to the plate first in the shootout. He skated in on Sawchenko and beat him with a backhander. Fix-Wolanksy went first for Cleveland and was shutdown by Hellberg. In round two, Hyrckowian was stopped, as was Cleveland's Mikael Pyyhtia. In the final round, Cameron Hughes had the game on his stick, skated in on Sawchenko and sniped a shot in the top right corner to win the game for Texas.
Saturday's series finale was a goaltending duel. Remi Poirier was in net for Texas and Jet Graeves started for Cleveland.
The game saw no scoring until nearly the end of the first period where Luca Del Bel Belluz snapped a shot from the left circle to beat Poirier and give Cleveland a 1-0 lead.
Texas continued to work in the offense zone in the second period but weren't rewarded until the halfway point of the frame when Hughes dug the puck out from behind the net and found Lind in front where he beat Greaves for his third goal in two games. Less than two minutes later, Kyle Capobianco found Kyle Looft on the left side of the offensive zone where he had a lot of room, Looft shot the puck through traffic past Greaves to give the Stars the 2-1 lead.
In the final frame, the Monsters pulled their goaltender with nearly three minutes left but Texas pestered them the entire time. Curtis McKenzie forced Rocco Grimaldi off the puck in the defensive zone and found Blumel who was streaking ahead towards the empty net. Blumel skated the puck all the way to the open cage, tallying his 38th of the season—good for a new franchise record for most goals in a single season.
The Stars headed home with five wins on the road trip and 10 points.
The Texas Stars return home for a four-game week against division opponents, the Iowa Wild and Milwaukee Admirals.
Tuesday and Wednesday, the Wild come to Cedar Park for a mid-week matchup and to wrap up the season series. The Wild currently sit in last place in the Central Division with a record of 22-35-5-1 and 50 points. In their last 10 games, they are 3-5-2-0, losing their last four games against Ontario, Chicago and Springfield.
Iowa's leading scorer is Travis Boyd who has 47 points in 54 games this season—most of those points have come in the form of assists.
This weekend, the Admirals come to town for the final time this season. Milwaukee is currently in 2nd place in the Central Division with a record of 34-21-5-6 and 79 points. In their last 10 games, they are 5-3-1-1 and most recently lost to Henderson, 4-1. The Admirals don't play again until Saturday in Texas—giving the Stars the leverage to create more of a gap in the division race.
This season, the leading scorer from Milwaukee against Texas is Gregori Denisenko who was traded to the Nashville Predators from Vegas on February 18, 2025. Denisenko was immediately sent to Milwaukee and in five games against the Stars has put up 6 points (3-3=6). The next Admirals player with the most points against the Stars this season is veteran Cal O'Reilly who also has 6 points (3-3=6) in 6 games.
