The Texas Stars split the weekend series with the Milwaukee Admirals. Texas leads the season series 3-1-0-0 through four games.
In Saturday's contest, Milwaukee opened the scoring with just under four minutes left in the first period. Kevin Gravel threw a puck towards the net from the left wing wall where he found Cal O'Reilly on the backdoor, who tapped it in past Magnus Hellberg. The Admirals held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
In the middle frame, Texas put the pressure on in the Milwaukee zone that led to a turnover right to Justin Ertel. Ertel fired it on net and beat Magnus Chrona for his first AHL goal and tied the game at one with 15:24 left in the period.
Less than a minute later, the Admirals went back in front when O'Reilly found Joakim Kemell through traffic in front of the Texas net and he snapped it over the shoulder of Hellberg. The Admirals led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
The third period began with a Texas power play where Cameron Hughes found Arttu Hyry on the edge of the right circle, who one-timed it past Chrona.
Less than two minutes later, Milwaukee went ahead again when Marc Del Gaizo fired a one-timer into the net from high in the slot.
At 12:47, Alex Petrovic fired a shot from just beyond the left circle. Gravel, who was in front of the net, moved his hands to block the puck from hitting his face, but it deflected off his gloves and over Chrona to tie the game at three.
Overtime was looming over the horizon when Antonio Stranges gave the Stars the lead with 46 seconds left in regulation. Hyry skated to the goal line with the puck and found Stranges on the doorstep who beat Chrona under the blocker.
The Stars held the Admirals off the board through the final horn and skated away with the comeback win.
Sunday's game was a different story for the Stars.
In the first period, the Admirals got off to a hot start with two goals from Anthony Angello and Ryder Rolston. Angello beat Hellberg on the glove side when he snapped a wrist shot from the left circle and Rolston over the glove from the slot.
In the second period, the Admirals extended their lead to three when Jake Luccini slung the puck through traffic from the blue line that beat Hellberg on the stick side.
Through 40 minutes of play, no penalties were assessed.
In the final frame, the Stars put up 20 shots on their former teammate, Matt Murray, who was vying for his first shutout with his new team.
With less than three minutes left, Texas pulled Hellberg for the extra attacker but Miwaukee scrounged after a loose puck and O'Reilly put it in the back of the net.
Murray finished with a 30-save shutout and the Admirals skated away with a 4-0 win, their first against Texas this season.
The Texas Stars head back out on the road this weekend to face the Iowa Wild.
Iowa began the 2024-25 campaign on a seven-game losing streak including two losses to Texas in Cedar Park. Since they broke the streak on October 29 against Chicago where they won 3-2, the Wild have only won seven more games. They currently sit in the sixth position of the Central Division with a record of 14-21-2-0 through 37 games.
Iowa's leading scorer is Travis Boyd who has 25 points (6-19=25) in 28 games. Their NHL affiliate, the Minnesota Wild has dipped into Iowa's roster for a few players this season, similar to Texas and Dallas.
Liam Ohgren and Brendan Gaunce are currently up with the big club where Minnesota is second in the Central Division with a one point lead on Dallas.
Texas will make another Wednesday pit-stop in Milwaukee on January 29 to face the Admirals for the fourth time in one month.
