TORONTO - The magical ride for the Texas Stars came up one win short in a Game 7 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Thursday night by a 6-1 final in front of a sellout crowd at Ricoh Coliseum.
Andreas Johnsson scored two goals on his way to winning the Jack Butterfield trophy as the MVP of the postseason. Austin Fyten scored the lone Texas goal and Mike McKenna recorded his fourth 40-save performance of the playoffs in the loss.
Johnsson opened up the scoring midway through the first on a follow-up chance in the slot for his first of the night. With 17 seconds remaining in the first, Mason Marchment capped off a counter-attack rush with a one-time goal in the slot for his fifth of the postseason.
After a scoreless second, Carl Grundstrom buried a back-door goal on Johnsson's feed for a 3-0 Toronto lead, and from the there the Marlies took over. Fyten stuffed home a look puck midway through the third to put Texas on the board, but Toronto added two more and an empty-net chance to run away in the end.
Texas finished as Western Conference Champions for the third time in their team history. It was the 11th Game 7 in Calder Cup Finals history as the Marlies claimed their first championship.
