STOCKTON, Calif. - The Texas Stars ran into another frustrating night against goaltender Jon Gillies, who turned aside 28 shots to lead the Stockton Heat to a 2-0 shutout win on Saturday night at Stockton Arena.
Twenty-five of Gillies' saves came in the second and third period to preseve Stockton's 1-0 lead that was created by Austin Carroll just six minutes into the game. Mike McKenna was brilliant in net for Stars despite suffering the loss with 22 saves. In his career against Texas, Gillies improved his mark to 5-0-0 in five games, giving up just seven goals over that span.
The Stars (20-15-4-1) continue their road trip against the Ontario Reign on Monday at 3 p.m. CST.
Carroll's first-period goal was his second of the season to cap off an odd-man rush for the Heat (18-12-2-3).
Spencer Foo added an empty-net goal late for the Heat, who have shut out the Stars twice this season and did so a day after Texas scored seven times in the opener of the weekend set between the two teams.
