STOCKTON, Calf. -- A three-goal first period set the tone for the Stockton Heat and Jon Gillies took care of the rest with 31 saves in net to hand the Texas Stars a 5-1 loss on Wednesday night at Stockton Arena.

Cole Ully scored the lone goal for Texas (24-23-1-2) late in the third. Austin Carroll, Morgan Klimchuk and Linden Vey each scored the first period tallies for the Heat (20-21-4-1), who snapped a 10-game winless skid and picked up just their fourth win in their last 22 games.

Texas continues their road trip on Friday when they visit the San Diego Gulls at 9 p.m. CST.

Carroll opened up the scoring at 1:36 of the game from the right circle. Klimchuk then buried a Texas turnover from the slot at 7:39 and Vey's tally came at 12:26.

Texas settled things down in the second, outshooting the Heat 13-8 in the frame, but Matt Frattin's shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 7:32 gave the Heat a 4-0 advantage and full control of the game.

Andrew Mangiapane added a fifth Stockton goal from Brandon Bollig's centering pass in the corner at 7:22 of the third. Matej Stransky set up Ully in the slot for the Stars' only strike of the night with six minutes to play. Justin Dowling also earned his 200th career AHL point with the secondary helper.

Justin Peters suffered the loss with 30 saves. Gillies picked up his third win over the Stars in three career meetings.

Both teams were scoreless on the power play. Texas finished 0-for-6. Stockton was 0-for-4.
