Shores Ties Franchise Record by Scoring in Fifth Straight Game
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Brendan Ranford tallied a three-point night and Devin Shore extended his goal-scoring streak to five games as the Texas Stars shot down the San Diego Gulls on Wednesday night in a 5-3 win at Valley View Casino Center in front of 6,406 in attendance.
It was the second straight win for the Stars (11-7-0-1) on their four-game road trip to the West Coast. Ranford scored a goal and added two assists. Shore finished with a goal and a helper, and his five-game goal-scoring streak ties a franchise record with his second period tally.
The Stars continue their road trip on Saturday at San Jose at 3:15 p.m. CST.
Trailing the Stars, 4-0, entering the third, the Gulls (9-7-0-1) made a strong push scoring three goals in just over seven minutes to start the period. Mike Sgarbossa put the Gulls on the board at 2:47. Joseph Cramarossa added another just over a minute later and Brandon Montour made it a 4-3 score at 7:03. With momentum building in favor of the hometown Gulls, Stars captain Travis Morin let the air out of the building at 9:53 of the third with a backhand effort from the slot for his fifth of the season.
Texas opened up the scoring at 7:03 of the first with Esa Lindell scoring his fourth of the season after driving the net through the right circle. The tally also made it six straight games for the Stars with a power play goal. With three minutes left in the frame, Ranford blocked a shot to spring himself on a breakaway chance and converted the backhand shot for his fifth of the season to make it 2-0, Texas.
Midway through period two Ranford fed a loose puck to the front of the net that was forced in by Shore to make it 3-0 and giving the rookie forward 13 goals on the year to lead the AHL. 32 seconds later, Justin Dowling opened up a 4-0 lead on a loose puck in the goal crease for his sixth of the season.
Wednesday’s game featured a matchup of the AHL’s two top-scoring rookies in Shore and Montour. With his two points in the game, Shore overtook the San Diego defenseman for the rookie scoring lead with 20 points on the season. Montour sits at 19.
Jack Campbell earned his second straight win in a 17-save performance. Matt Hackett took the loss for the Gulls going 30 of 35.
