SAN ANTONIO - After Mike McKenna stole the third period to get the game to overtime, Brent Regner ended the night with 31 seconds remaining in the extra frame to give the Texas Stars a 2-1 win over the San Antonio Rampage on Sunday evening at AT&T Center.
Regner's goal came on an odd-man rush for his seventh of the season with a wrist shot from the left circle. More importantly, the veteran defenseman pushed the Stars (30-21-5-3) back into playoff positioning as the Ontario Reign lost their game earlier in the day.
Texas hosts the Iowa Wild at 7:30 p.m. CST on Wednesday at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
Tied at 1-1 entering the third, McKenna shut down a pressuring offense from the Rampage (27-23-9-0) on mutiple occasions in the period as Texas struggled at times to get the puck out of their own zone. The Texas netminder made nine saves in the third and finished 33 of 34 in net for his 13th win of the season.
Both teams traded goals in the first as Adam Musil opened up the scoring for the Rampage by deflecting Brendan Ranford's point shot 9:29 into the game. Greg Rallo responded for the Stars with 3:25 left in the first on a one-time blast at the blue line that beat a screened Ville Husso for his fourth of the season and his 98th career goal as a Star.
McKenna also backstopped a Texas penalty-kill unit that stopped all six power-play chances the Rampage had throughout the game, including one with four minutes to play in regulation before the game moved to overtime.
Rallo's strike came on the Stars' only power play in the contest.
