Stars Erase 4-1 Deficit in Third in Shootout Loss to Rockford
ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Texas Stars scored a trio of goals in the third period to erase a 4-1 deficit and earn a point in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday night in front of 4,974 fans in attendance at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
Texas (8-6-1-1) outshot the IceHogs (7-8-1-0) 18-2 in the third to force the extra period. Andrew Bodnarchuk’s fourth of the season knotted the score for Texas late in regulation. Rockford’s Eric Gustafsson tallied a pair of goals.
Texas wraps up their four-game road trip on Friday when they visit the San Antonio Rampage at 7:30 p.m.
Cole Ully, Brandon DeFazio and Bodnarchuk were the third period goal-scorers for Texas to turn a 4-1 deficit into a tie hockey game. Ully’s power play strike came from the front of the net at 5:27. DeFazio capped off a Justin Dowling centering feed just over a minute after Ully’s goal. Jason Dickinson set up Bodnarchuk’s tying marker from behind the net with 2:39 remaining in regulation.
All of that occurred after Mark McNeill scored a shorthanded goal for the IceHogs 39 seconds before Ully found the back of the net.
Gustafsson opened up the scoring with the first period’s only goal eight minutes into the game.
The IceHogs opened up a 2-0 lead at 2:20 of the second courtesy of Carl Dahlstrom, but Denis Gurianov tipped home his second of the year for Texas off a centering pass from Ludwig Bystrom 90 seconds later. Gustafsson added a power play strike at 11:23 to make it a 3-1 Rockford lead before the Stars’ third-period heroics.
Spencer Abbott and Martin Lundberg each scored in the shootout for Rockford. Brendan Ranford was the Stars’ only scorer in the shootout. Lars Johansson earned the win stopping 43 of 47 shots in net for the IceHogs. Max Lagace suffered the loss stopping 28 of 32.
Texas went 1-for-4 on the power play. Rockford went 1-for-3.
