Dickinson Scores League Leading Third Shorthanded Goal
ONTARIO, Calif. -- Playing their third game in as many nights, the Texas Stars ran out of gas down the stretch and gave up a pair of goals in the third period in a 2-1 road loss to the Ontario Reign on Sunday evening to close out their West Coast road trip in front of 9,491 at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Jason Dickinson scored the Stars only goal in the loss. Texas saw their four-game winning streak come to a close and in three matchups this season between the two teams, the Stars have come out on the wrong side of a one-goal decision each time, including one in overtime.
Texas (21-15-3-3) returns home on Friday to play the San Diego Gulls at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Andrew Crescenzi scored a late power play goal for the Reign (21-10-2-1) on a rebound chance with the 22 seconds remaining in regulation for the game-winning goal. Nic Dowd lifted a loose puck in front of the net at 6:33 of the third under the crossbar to knot the score at 1-1 for his sixth point this season against Texas (1-5=6) in three games.
Dickinson gave the Stars the 1-0 lead midway through the second on his third shorthanded goal, and 10th overall, this season. Ontario netminder Michael Houser left his goal crease to sweep a pass out to center ice that was promptly intercepted by Dickinson at the blue line and one-timed into an empty net to open up the game’s scoring.
Philippe Desrosiers suffered the loss in a 21-save performance, while Houser earned the win in his season debut for the Reign, stopping 21 of 22.
Texas finished 0-for-5 on the power play while the Reign went 1-for-4.
Dickinson is tied for the AHL lead with three shorthanded goals this year.
The Texas Stars are the primary development affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars and currently in their seventh season at Cedar Park Center.
