ONTARIO, Calif. - The Texas Stars scored with a minute to play in regulation to get the game to overtime, but Mike Amadio had the last laugh for the Ontraio Reign, scoring the only goal in the shootout to lock up a 3-2 final on Monday afternoon in front of 6,570 in attendance at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Justin Dowling stuffed home an extra-attacker goal for the Stars (20-15-4-2) with 1:02 to play in regulation to even up the game and force overtime. Travis Morin also scored a third period goal for Texas for his sixth of the year. Landon Bow stopped 37 of 39 shots in the game, prior to the shootout, in the loss.
Texas continues their road trip on Friday when they begin a weekend set against the Manitoba Moose at 7 p.m. CST.
Philippe Maillet opened up the scoring midway through period one off an offensive zone faceoff to give the Reign a 1-0 lead in what was a relatively quiet game until the midway point of the third.
The Stars failed to capitalize on a three power-play chances in the first. The Reign (19-15-1-1) whiffed on a pair of power plays in the second, and the struggles finally came to a halt at 10:37 of the third when Morin located a loose puck in the slot to backhand past Jack Campbell to knot the score.
Less than a minute after Morin's goal, Amadio drilled a one-timer from the left circle off Matt Moulson's crossing feed to regain the Reign lead before Dowling's late strike.
Amadio's shootout-winner came in round one. Campbell denied Morin, Brian Flynn and Curtis McKenzie for Texas to earn the win. The Reign netminder finished with 29 saves on the night.
Texas finished 0-for-4 on the power play, including a full 4-on-3 chance in overtime. Ontario was 0-for-2.
