CEDAR PARK, Texas - Austin Fyten's shorthanded tally was the highlight of a three-goal second period that lifted the Texas Stars to a 4-2 win over the Iowa Wild on Wednesday, and back into playoff positioning, in front of 4,750 fans at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The win placed Texas (31-21-5-3) back in fourth in the Pacific Division as Colin Markison paced the offense with a three-point night (1-2=3). Landon Bow stopped 20 of 22 shots in net for his 16th win of the season and the Stars took three of four meetings against Iowa (27-18-8-4) in the season series.
The Stars travel to Tucson this weekend for two-game set against the Roadrunners Friday and Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CST.
Tied at 2-2, Fyten's shorthanded goal came midway through the second when the puck rebounded off of Iowa Wild goaltender Niklas Svedberg for a tip-in chance generated by Markison's breakaway run. Markison had knotted the game 34 seconds into the period when a point shot deflected off him for his sixth of the year.
Returning to the lineup after a four-game absence, Justin Dowling added his 10th of the season with three minutes left in the second on a wrist shot from the left circle to make it 4-2.
Iowa struck early to open the scoring as a Kurtis Gabriel's breakaway shot found the back of the net within the first minute of the game. Sheldon Dries responded for the Stars with a centering feed from the corner that glanced of Svedberg's skate and in the net for the rookie's 13th of the season. Zack Mitchell tipped in a power-play goal through Bow’s legs to make it 2-1, Iowa, before the Stars' second period surge.
Svedberg stopped 29 of 33 shots in net in the loss for Iowa.
Texas was 0-for-3 on the power play. Iowa went 1-for-4.
