Backman Scores Lone Goal for Texas
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Jared Coreau weathered a first period storm from the Texas Stars and opened the door for the Grand Rapids Griffins to skate away with a 6-1 win on Saturday night in front of 8,028 at Van Andel Arena.
It was the 14th consecutive win for Grand Rapids (16-8-0-1). Mattias Backman scored the only goal for the Stars (14-12-2-2). Texas now enjoys a six-day layoff until their next game, their longest break of the season.
The Stars host the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday at 7 p.m. CST.
Martin Frk's slap shot from the right circle for Grand Rapids opened up the game's scoring at 5:12 of the first for a power play goal.
In period two, the Griffins tacked on two more goals to extend their lead to 3-0 beginning with Brian Lashoff's goal at 1:47 to cap off a counterattack rush. Tomas Nosek touched home a rebound goal from the top of the goal crease at 13:55 off a one-time shot from the slot for his second of the season.
The Griffins made it a 5-0 cushion in the third with goals from Anthony Mantha at 8:53 and Andy Miele at 12:57. Backman scored his second goal of the season for the Stars at 13:39 to end the shutout bid for Coreau when his centering pass glanced off a Griffins player and in the net. Andreas Athanasiou added one more for Grand Rapids for the 6-1 final.
The Stars finished 0-for-3 on the power play. Grand Rapids went 1-for-4.
