CLEVELAND, Ohio - Samuel Laberge's first career AHL goal held up as the game-winner and Landon Bow shut the door at the end as the Texas Stars topped the Cleveland Monsters, 3-2, on Saturday night in front of 9,136 fans at Quicken Loans Arena.
Laberge’s goal came at 6:24 in the third period on a rebound chance off the back boards. Bow made 10 of his 21 saves in the third period as the Monsters made a final push to try and even the score. Roope Hintz and Bryan Flynn also scored for Texas. The Stars swept their weekend pair of games in Cleveland with the win.
Texas (11-8-0-1) heads to Grand Rapids to take on the Griffins Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m CST.
Hintz scored for the second straight game when he tapped in Matt Mangene's centering pass on the power play and the opening goal 2:40 into the game. The Monsters (7-6-2-2) answered a minute later as Nick Moutrey redirected the puck with a backhand just outside the crease for his first of the season.
The Stars regained the lead on Flynn’s short-handed goal at 4:52 of the second. Brent Regner carried the puck into the offensive zone and set up Flynn on the odd-man rush, who beat Joonas Korpisalo for the Stars' second shorthanded goal of the year.
Laberge pushed the Stars’ lead to 3-1, but Miles Koules deflected in a power-play goal from the front of the crease to cut into the Texas lead with four minutes to play. Texas held off a final push from the Monsters to improve their record to 8-1-0-0 when leading after two periods of play.
Korpisalo took the loss with 20 saves. Both teams finished 1-for-5 on the power play.
Curtis McKenzie's point streak for the Stars ended at six games.
