Wolves End Texas’ Franchise Record Winning Streak

ROSEMONT, IL – Playing with two players short of a full lineup the Texas Stars suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Wolves Wednesday night at Allstate Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Chicago took the lead on a goal by Brett Sterling at 6:11 of the second period. The Wolves’ leading scorer caused a turnover behind the Texas net and skated out in front before sliding the puck between the pads of goalie Jack Campbell.

Sterling doubled his tally three minutes into the third period when he took advantage of another turnover to race down the right wing and snap a wrist shot under Campbell’s blocker and inside the far post. Stefan Schneider made it 3-0 Wolves at 12:32 as he came off the left wall, skated unimpeded out to the low slot and beat Campbell to the near post. Stars’ leading goal scorer Matt Fraser spoiled the shutout bid of former Texas goalie Matt Climie with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Fraser finished off a rush from Toby Petersen and Austin Smith at 18:02 putting the Stars on the board. The goal also extended Fraser’s current goal-scoring streak to four games. Texas pulled Campbell for an extra attacker and created several scoring chances, but Michael Davies fired a shot off the right post and in from center ice to score an empty net goal and cap off a 4-1 Chicago victory.

Matt Climie finished with 19 saves on 20 shots to earn the win in goal for the Wolves, while Jack Campbell stopped 25-of-28 shots and took the loss for Texas. Chicago out-shot the Stars 29-20 and went 0-for-3 on the power play; Texas was 0-for-1 with the man advantage. The loss ended the Stars new club record six-game winning streak and was the first loss for the team in the 2013 calendar year. Texas only dressed 16 skaters for the game, two short of a full lineup.
