Campbell, Texas Shuts Out Checkers 3-0 In Return Home

Mar 8, 2014

Jack Campbell, starting his first home game since December 18th, stopped all 23 shots he faced as the Texas Stars defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-0 Saturday night in front of 5,469 fans at Cedar Park Center. The win vaulted Texas back over the Grand Rapids Griffins into first place in the Western Conference with 16 games remaining in the 2013-14 regular season.

The Stars struck first when Chris Mueller dangled around a Charlotte player in the corner and fired a pass across the crease where Dustin Jeffrey was waiting to put home the goal, giving Texas a 1-0 lead. The Stars led in shots 9-7, but the Jeffrey goal was the only one of the period.

Colton Sceviour extended the Texas lead on the power play at 4:51 of the second, when he buried the rebound off a Curtis McKenzie shot to make it 2-0. Travis Morin was also credited for an assist on Sceviour’s AHL-leading 32nd goal of the season.

The Stars tripled their lead just 88 seconds into the third, with Justin Dowling finding Patrik Nemeth, who ripped a wrist shot from the high slot that beat Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy. Nemeth’s goal, his first of the season and second of his two-year AHL career, was assisted by Dowling rookie Brett Ritchie.

Jack Campbell (7-0-0) stopped all 23 shots faced in his first start at Cedar Park Center since December 18th and recorded his first shutout of the season, his fourth of his AHL career. Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy (4-9-0) had 32 saves on 35 shots, getting his ninth loss of the year. The Stars outshot the Checkers 35-23 and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Charlotte was 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.

The Texas Stars will complete their eight-game season series against the Charlotte Checkers on Wednesday, March 12th for a 7:30 p.m. face off at Cedar Park Center. Wednesday’s game is the final Winning Wednesday presented by H-E-B of the 2013-14 regular season. Pro-rated full and partial 2013-14 Texas Stars Season Tickets are on sale now.
