OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Rookie goaltender Jack Campbell stopped all 36 shots that he faced to lead the Texas Stars to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Oklahoma City Barons Sunday afternoon at Cox Convention Center.
Shrugging off the fatigue of playing their third game in less than 48 hours, the Stars grabbed the lead by scoring a power play goal for the 11th consecutive game. Texas’ leading goal scorer Matt Fraser snapped a twisted wrist shot over the shoulder of goaltender Olivier Roy from just above the right faceoff dot to tally his 17th goal of the year. There were not many other grade-A scoring chances in the period as the Barons had the slight edge in shots 7-5.
After a scoreless second period, Colton Sceviour scored a much needed insurance goal. Jace Coyle, playing in his first game for the Stars this season, made a beautiful long pass up the ice to send Sceviour on a breakaway. Sceviour beat Roy with a nifty move to score his 11th goal of the year and put Texas ahead 2-0. Stars goalie Jack Campbell faced a barrage of Oklahoma City shots in the third period, but had an answer for everything sent his way. In the closing minutes the Barons pulled Roy for an extra attacker and Tomas Vincour capped off the scoring with an empty net goal at 19:44. Oklahoma City out-shot Texas 18-5 in the third period, but could not solve Campbell.
Texas rookie goaltender Jack Campbell made 36 saves to record his first shutout and sixth win of the season, while Olivier Roy took the loss with 13 saves on 15 shots in goal for Oklahoma City. The Barons out-shot the Stars 36-16 in the game and were held 0-for-4 on the power play, while Texas went 1-for-3 on the man advantage. The Stars have now won six consecutive games and have swept back-to-back three-in-three weekends as the team reaches the halfway point of their 2012-13 season schedule.
Texas continues its six-game road trip on Wednesday, January 16th against the Chicago Wolves at Allstate Arena. The Stars return home on Saturday, January 26th to square off with the San Antonio Rampage at 7:00 p.m. at Cedar Park Center.
