ROCHESTER, NY – Tomas Vincour scored two goals and Colton Sceviour’s team-leading third shorthanded goal of the year was the game-winner as the Texas Stars blasted the Rochester Americans 5-1 Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena.
Playing in just their third ever regular season meeting, the two teams opened the game like it was their 50th all-time head-to-head matchup. Mathieu Tousignant helped the Stars draw first blood as he was the quickest to react to a loose puck. On a rebound from a Taylor Vause shot that squirted free from goaltender David Leggio, Tousignant pounced on the puck and tapped in his first goal of the season at 15:32. Vause and Hubert Labrie each assisted on the goal as Texas carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Stars opened up the lead in the second period, scoring three goals in the span of 6:19. Colton Sceviour gave Texas a 2-0 lead when he was sent off on a shorthanded breakaway by a long pass from Francis Wathier. Sceviour deked Leggio and lifted a backhand shot over the Americans goalie at 10:33 for his team-leading third shorthanded goal of the year. Sceviour then set up Mike Hedden for a power play goal at 16:15 as Hedden stick-handled around the sprawling Rochester goalie and deposited the puck into the open net. A mere 37 seconds later Tomas Vincour made it 4-0 as he tipped in a Jace Coyle shot for his eight goal of the year and Tom Wandell, playing in his first AHL game since April 13, 2008, tallied the second assist on the game. With 1:17 seconds left in the second period Rochester defenseman Alex Biega produced the only blemish on Stars goalie Jack Campbell’s night as he scored on a shorthanded breakaway to make it 4-1. Texas out-shot the Americans 19-6 in the middle frame.
The Stars clamped down the game in the third period and Vincour added his second of the night at 16:08, one-timing his own rebound into the net to make it 5-1. Austin Fyten had the primary assist on the goal, while Campbell picked up his first career professional point with the second assist.
Jack Campbell stopped 21-of-22 shots for his third straight victory and his 11th win of the season, leading Texas to its 31st win of the year, equaling the Stars win total from the 2011-12 campaign. David Leggio finished with 33 saves on 38 shots and took the loss in goal for Rochester. The Stars out-shot the Americans 38-22 and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Rochester were 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Texas continues its seven-day, four-game road trip on Friday, February 22nd as they travel to Cleveland for a 6:30 p.m. CST faceoff with the Lake Erie Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena.
